I Need to Think About It

Thinking is reasonable. Vague thinking produces vague decisions. Help the buyer identify the exact question.

People do not think about things they are clear on. There is a specific unanswered question in the room, and they chose not to raise it with you sitting there.

What they say

  • “Let me think about it”
  • “I want to sleep on it”
  • “Give me some time”

What's actually underneath it

An unspoken objection they did not want to say out loud

Not enough clarity to defend the decision to themselves

Avoiding the discomfort of saying no

A real decision-maker is not in the room

The ten questions that open it up

Ask one. Then stop talking. The answer is worth more than anything you were about to say.

  1. 1.“Of course - what specifically do you feel you need to think through?”
  2. 2.“Which part of the decision still feels unresolved?”
  3. 3.“Are you uncertain about the solution, the investment, the timing, or something else?”
  4. 4.“What information do you feel is still missing?”
  5. 5.“When you have delayed similar decisions before, what were you usually concerned about?”
  6. 6.“What would need to become clear for you to feel comfortable moving forward?”
  7. 7.“Is there a concern you haven't mentioned because you're not sure how to say it?”
  8. 8.“If you took the next week to think, what question would you be trying to answer?”
  9. 9.“What happens if you think about it but nothing in your situation changes?”
  10. 10.“Would it help to work through the unresolved part together right now?”

The trap

Saying "sure, take your time" and hanging up. The deal dies in that silence.

Name the question and handle it. If they still want time, fine - but leave knowing which way they are leaning, or you are not following up, you are guessing.
